European Union justice ministers have agreed to move ahead with an agreement for tighter laws on terrorism across Europe. They agreed upon the anti-terrorism proposals during a meeting in Brussels as part of efforts to step up the fight against terrorism.
The proposals include improved co-operation between national police forces and a European arrest warrant. It will be December before the final details are approved, and early next year before any changes become legislation.
Meanwhile, the British Prime Minister has said British forces will almost certainly be involved in any military strikes against those responsible for the terror attacks. Tony Blair urged the world to show solidarity in the next few days as events unfold.
He was speaking at the Elysée Palace in Paris after talks with President Jacques Chirac. Mr Blair has been travelling to New York where he will attend a memorial for the British victims of the attacks at a church close to the shattered remains of the World Trade Centre. He will then fly to Washington for Whitehouse talks with US President George W Bush.
