Aer Lingus airbus makes safe emergency landing

An Aer Lingus transatlantic airbus, forced to return to Shannon because of a problem with one of its engines, has landed safely. There were 273 people are on board the aircraft, which was around 250 miles off the west coast when the problem was identified.

It was bound for Baltimore in Washington. The pilot of the Airbus declared an emergency after discovering a drop in oil pressure in one engine.

A spokesman for Air Traffic Control at Shannon said all the usual emergency procedures had been put in operation but the plane landed safely.
