Preliminary results indicate that the suspected food poisoning outbreak at a hotel in Mayo may be water related. However, it will be next week before the Western Health Board can positively establish the cause of the outbreak at the Pontoon Bridge Hotel.
The Health Board's Director of Public Health said that the indications are that people who attended a number of functions at the hotel contracted a form of viral gastro-enteritis. At present the Board is focusing its investigation on the hotel's water supply but the results of food sample test are still awaited.
Initially 30 people reported symptoms of food poisoning. Since then almost 300 people have contacted the Health Board. The hotel's kitchen and bars are closed while the investigation continues. People wishing to contact the Health Board can call its Community Care Centre in Castlebar over the weekend. The number is 094 42262.
