One killed, another wounded in West Bank blasts

One Palestinian man has been killed and another critically wounded in separate explosions in the West Bank. It is thought one of men was killed accidentally in the city of Nablus while preparing a bomb.

The second blast, which seriously injured a 25-year-old man, took place earlier in the day in the city of Ramallah. A senior Palestinian security official accused Israel of trying to assassinate the man.

Meanwhile, the militant Islamic movement Hamas has threatened to carry out more suicide bombings in Israel. The threat comes in response to the invasion of the Palestinian-ruled West Bank city of Jenin by Israeli tanks.

A Palestinian police headquarters was destroyed in the manoeuvre. The Israeli army said that the attack was in retaliation for recent attacks in Jerusalem and Haifa.

Some reports say that heavy fighting accompanied the incursion, although there have been no reports of casualties. The Chief Palestinian Negotiator, Saeb Erekat, said that the attack was unwarranted.

The Palestinian Authority branded the operation a "declaration of war" and said that it had appealed to the United Nations Security Council for international protection.
