Gardaí in Limerick are investigating what they describe as a very serious assault in the city last night. The assault left a man in his forties fighting for his life.
The man was discovered lying in a semiconscious state at Tates Lane off Parnell Street in Limerick City Centre at around 11pm. He had been badly beaten up and was rushed to Limerick Regional Hospital where he is being treated for head and other injuries.
Gardaí have identified him, but have not released his name. He is from the outskirts of Limerick City. He is not known to Gardaí who are trying to find a motive for the assault.
They are appealing for help from anyone who was in the Parnell Street or Tates Lane area between 10 and 11 o'clock last night to contact the Gardaí at Roxbora Station 061 214343.
