The Israeli security forces have arrested a Palestinian who they say was about to carry out a suicide bomb attack in Tel Aviv. The Defence Minister, Binyamin Ben-Eliezer, said that the man had been due to receive a package of explosives from a Hamas activist who was killed in an Israeli helicopter strike in the West Bank yesterday.
The 20-year-old man was accused of being a member of the militant movement, and Israeli security forces said that he was wanted for murder. Two other Palestinians also died yesterday.
Earlier today, the Israeli Army shelled three Palestinian security posts in the West Bank. No one was injured in the attack.
Reports claimed that Israeli tanks fired on the posts near the town of Qalqilya in retaliation for a gun attack on a car near the Palestinian town yesterday in which one Jewish settler was killed and four others were injured.
The weekend has seen some of the worst fighting in the region since a ceasefire was agreed in June. Israeli Prime Minister, Ariel Sharon, said in an interview yesterday that Israel would continue to take "defensive, counter-terrorist measures" to protect its citizens.
