The Department of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that two Irish citizens, a mother and her eight-year-old child, have drowned off the coast of Kenya. The woman's husband, a British citizen, also died and their five-year-old child is still missing.
Local reports said that the three drowned while on a fishing trip off the southern coastal town of Mombassa. It is believed that the boat capsized when it was hit by a large wave.
Three crew members were rescued, along with two brothers, aged 10 and 12, who were from Nairobi and were holidaying at the same hotel as the family. It is believed that they had been invited along on the fishing trip.
A Foreign Affairs spokesman said that Kenyan navy divers are conducting a search for the missing child. The woman is believed to have been from Dublin and the family had been living in the city. The spokesman said that no other details could be confirmed until relatives had been informed.
