Dutch "abortion ship" sets sail for Ireland

A Dutch ship which is equipped with an operating theatre to carry out abortions left Holland this evening bound for Ireland. The Amsterdam-based Women on Waves Foundation kept the name of the port of departure in the Netherlands confidential in the hopes of avoiding anti-abortion demonstrations.

The ship is expected to dock at Dublin and Cork ports, the foundation said. Any abortions performed will be carried out in international waters. Abortion is illegal in the Republic of Ireland except in cases where the life of the mother is in danger.
