Members of the European Parliament have strongly criticised the Nice Treaty. MEPs described the Treaty as an "unambitious failure" that makes EU decision making more complicated. MEPs also criticised the way it was negotiated. They were debating a report on the Treaty in Brussels.
The MEP, Dana Rosemary Scallon, said that if the Treaty of Nice was passed Ireland's power to remain neutral would be undermined. Dana said that the Treaty would militarise the EU, with areas of operation covering the EU, parts of Russia, the Middle East and Africa. The referendum on the Treaty takes place here on 7 June.
