David Trimble has said that people should focus on the six weeks after 1 July, rather than the date of his resignation threat. Northern Ireland's First Minister told an Ulster Unionist election press conference this morning that the period should be used to create a pressure cooker in which Sinn Féin would be forced to "honour their promises" on decommissioning.
Mr Trimble has lodged a letter dated for July 1. It states that he will resign as First Minister if there is no start to IRA decommissioning. Legislation states that six weeks must elapse from that date before the North's power sharing institutions are dissolved by the Secretary of State and fresh Assembly elections are called.
