Smurfit shareholders voice anger over chairman's salary p

Angry shareholders have been protesting the salary and bonuses paid to the Chairman and Chief Executive of Jefferson Smurfit Group at the company's AGM in Dublin. Many shareholders believe the salary and bonus package of £5m paid to Dr Michael Smurfit is unacceptable at a time when the company's share price is in the doldrums.

Dr Smurfit told the meeting that, given the performance of a US subsidiary this year, it was highly unlikely that a similar compensation package will be paid this year. When asked if he will retire soon, he said "I'll retire when I want to retire."
