Helicopter crash in Vietnam: 16 dead

Sixteen people, including seven US citizens searching for Americans missing in the Vietnam war, were reported killed after their helicopter crashed in central Vietnam. The US embassy said that it had been informed by the Vietnamese authorities that there were no survivors when the helicopter carrying seven American military personnel and nine Vietnamese came down in central Quang Binh Province.

"Both sides are taking appropriate action to recover and identify those aboard and to notify the next of kin," said a statement from the US embassy in Vietnam, "Our condolences go to all the families of those lost in this tragic incident." Earlier, the Pentagon reportedly said that the helicopter involved was an MI-17, a modified version of the Russian MI-8 introduced in 1981.
