EU leaders hint at Kyoto renegotiation

Two EU statesmen have said that parts of the Kyoto treaty on curbing global warming could be renegotiated to suit the United States. The suggestion was made jointly by the President of the European Commission, Romano Prodi, and the Swedish Prime Minister, Goran Persson, whose country currently holds the EU Presidency. They were responding to an announcement by President Bush last month that Washington would not be implementing the treaty, which was signed in 1997. In an article for a Swedish newspaper, the two men said that it would be better to negotiate on the issue than to tear up the entire treaty. Such a move, they said, would be a tragic mistake.
