The Guinness brewery in Dublin has confirmed that the Government has bought a large section of its premises for £15m. The Hopstore, an adjoining vat-house and other buildings are part of the Hopstore complex on a 1.7-acre site. Media Lab Europe, a joint venture between the Government and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, is already housed in the Hopstore and this purchase is part of the Government's plan to develop a digital district in the area.
Dublin Corporation has also begun to rollout a £100m plan to revitalise the Liberties and Coombe areas, as well as St James Street and Thomas Street. As part of that plan, Cork Street, one of the oldest and most dilapidated streets in the city, is being rebuilt, with an entirely new section linking Cork Street to St Patrick's Cathedral. RTÉ Online understands that Guinness and the Government are negotiating on the sale of a three-acre site between St James Street and the River Liffey for digital district developments.
