Eircell and Eircom workers threaten strike action

Four unions representing 12,000 workers in Eircell and Eircom have threatened strike action next Wednesday. The Communications Workers Union, IMPACT, CPSU and PSEU have given the company seven days notice of industrial action but the unions have not decided on an all out strike or a series of one day stoppages. Around 100 employees at two of Eircell's call centres in Dundalk and at College Green in Dublin are involved in unofficial action for two hours this afternoon.

The result of the action next Wednesday would leave the 087 network without technicians to correct coverage blackouts but it could spread to the Eircom fixed line network. The standoff between the company and the unions centres on compensation for 1,200 employees who will transfer to Vodafone as a result of the sale of Eircom's mobile wing to the British group.
