The Government has been called on to ensure that the quota of 3% of people with disabilities working in the public service is both achieved and maintained. The largest trade union in the country, SIPTU, says that a similar target should also be set in the private sector.
In a report on the Employment Status of People with Disabilities carried out by Terry Bryan of the Waterford branch of SIPTU, it was found that 98.9% of people questioned knew somebody with a disability, but just 1.5% knew of someone with a disability who was in employment. The Government, employers and trade unions have now been called upon to campaign to ensure more people with disabilities are brought into the workforce.
