Irish steel plant employee who died in fire named

The Irish ISPAT employee who died in a fire at the plant in Cork harbour overnight has been named as 53 year-old Thomas Mulcahy, from Gardiner's Hill in Cork City. Mr Mulcahy died after a fire broke out in the company's chemical laboratory. An investigation into how the fire started is now underway by the Health & Safety Authority, the Eironmental Protection Agency as well as the Cork County Fire Service.

Two firefighters who were admitted to hospital were released earlier. Up to a short time ago, two units of Cork County fire brigade were still tackling the blaze, which caused extensive damage to the chemical lab at the plant. ISPAT is Ireland's only steel plant and employs around 300 people. In a statement, Irish ISPAT Limited offered their sincere condolences to the family of their employee who died in the fire. The company said that investigations were ongoing and that it would not be issuing any further statements at this time.
