Aer Lingus investigates accident on board flight

Aer Lingus is investigating an incident in which a woman was injured on one of its flights last night as a result of unexpected turbulence. It is understood that Flight EI111 from Belfast to New York via Shannon was an hour outside of JKF Airport, when the pilot was requested by air traffic control to climb from 38,000 feet to 39,000 feet. The plane then swerved to the left as a result of unexpected "wake turbulence" caused by another plane seven or eight miles ahead.

Aer Lingus says that a woman who was walking down the aisle of the plane fell and broke her leg during the incident. It is understood that a surgeon on board attended to her. Another woman is said to have fainted. The pilot then requested that he go back down to 38,000 feet, which he did. Police and paramedics were at JFK when the plane landed.
