Efforts to reduce the level of violence in the Middle East have had a setback with the killing of an Israeli soldier and a Palestinian policeman in the Gaza Strip. The policeman opened fire on a military post, shooting dead one soldier and seriously wounding two others. He was killed when fire was returned. At least 240 people have now died in more than seven weeks of violence between Israelis and Palestinians.
