Zimbabwean Opposition leader calls on Mugabe to leave off

The leader of the opposition in Zimbabwe has called on the country's President, Robert Mugabe, to make "an honourable exit" from office. Speaking on RTÉ Radio, Morgan Tsvangirai of the Movement for Democratic Change said that Mr Mugabe was unstable and his lapses of rational thinking were exacerbating the country's problems with housing, poverty and AIDS.

Mr Tsvangirai is in Dublin where he is attending a conference of aid agencies. He said that Mr Mugabe has transformed beyond recognition during his term of office. The opposition won just under half of the votes in parliamentary elections during the summer, but President Mugabe and his government have been threatening to arrest Mr Tsvangirai.
