Albanians in Kosovo vote in first free election in provin

In Kosovo, voting has been taking place in the province's first local elections since the UN took over its administration in June of last year. There was a heavy turnout from early morning as voters came out in large numbers to cast their ballots. Some 900,000 people are registered to vote in the municipal elections. The minority Serb community boycotted the elections but the UN announced that a separate poll would take place in Serb areas within months. The main battle today was between the two main ethnic-Albanian parties for control of Kosovo's local authorities. The front-runners are the more moderate leader Ibrahim Rugova, and Hashim Thaci the former KLA rebel commander.
