Britain to set up CJD compensation fund

Britain wants to set up a fund to compensate its victims of CJD, the human form of BSE, or "mad cow" disease. The announcement came as the report of the official inquiry into the BSE outbreak was published. The report accused officials and Conservative former ministers of consistently playing down the risk to humans and failing to co-ordinate a government response. The official report on the BSE crisis in Britain was published after a two-and-a-half-year inquiry. The inquiry also focused on government failures to enforce abattoir controls that were designed to ensure that any potentially infected beef was removed from the food chain.
