Lebanon's opposition, led by former Prime Minister Rafiq al-Hariri, has won 18 out of the 19 seats in contention in Beirut, according to official results from yesterday's elections. The 19th seat went to a candidate from the Shiite fundamentalist group Hazbollah, who also had Hariri's support.
Outgoing Prime Minister Salim Hoss, secured less than 15,000 votes, according to the official tally. In southern Lebanon and in the Bekaa valley, the alliance of Hezbollah and the other main Shiite group, Amal, captured virtually all the seats being contested.
