The leading opponent of the military government in Burma, Aung San Suu Kyi, has been stopped by police after she tried to travel beyond the capital, Rangoon. She has been under house arrest there for the past two years. Sources in her party, the National League for Democracy, said that she had left Rangoon yesterday to attend a meeting of the League's youth wing but she was stopped by police on the outskirts of the city.
Priscilla Klapp from the United States Embassy in Rangoon said 24 hours had already passed since Aung San Suu Kyi left home. A statement from the military authorities says Aung San Suu Kyi had travelled without proper security arrangements and was stopped for her own safety.
