EPA proposes rejection of Silvermines dump application

The Environmental Protection Agency has proposed that an application for a landfill dump near Silvermines in County Tipperary be refused. It is the first time the EPA has refused a landfill application outright. The application, by Waste Management Operations Ireland, was turned down mainly on geological grounds, but the rejection also included concerns about pollution. The landfill was designed for household, commercial and non-hazardous industrial waste. The company has until September 12 to appeal the decision.
