Irish peacekeepers move into former Israeli-occupied zone

Irish and Ghanan United Nations peacekeepers have started moving into the former Israeli-occupied border zone in southern Lebanon. The troops took up positions early this morning in the zone just over a mile from the Israeli border. The deployment had been postponed because of alleged Israeli encroachments into Lebanese territory.

Israel withdrew its troops from the zone in May, ending 22 years of occupation. Since the Israeli forces withdrew, the former occupation zone has been controlled by Hezbollah militia.
