An inquest in Cork has been told how a 20-year-old woman was killed when the parapet of two adjoining buildings collapsed and fell onto the street where she was walking. Several other people were injured, some seriously. Aoife Bell from Kerrypike, Cork, died from head and neck injuries when some of the masonry fell on her at Washington Street in Cork city centre on the day before New Year's Eve last year.
The coroner, Dr Myra Cullinane, described Ms Bell's death as a tragedy of enormous proportions for her family. She said it was an exceptionally sad case. A verdict of accidental death was returned by the jury. Ms Bell had just returned to Cork from Australia to spend Christmas holidays with her family.
