Britain has announced that it is imposing new sanctions against Fiji following the deal which ended its hostage crisis but denied its ethnic Indian minority a significant role in government. Junior Foreign Minister John Battle said the sanctions included cancelling Foreign Office assistance programmes and planned military visits. Earlier this week Britain said it was recalling its High Commissioner for consultations. The Pacific state has already been suspended from the Councils of the Commonwealth.
