US President Bill Clinton has announced he is convening a three-way summit with the Israeli Prime Minister, Ehud Barak, and the Palestinian President, Yasser Arafat, early next week. The three sides will try to find agreement on what Mr Clinton calls core issues, although there have been complications.
The talks at Camp David, Maryland, will to try to reach an accord ahead of a September target for a final peace between Israel and the Palestinians. Earlier this week, the Palestinian Authority said it intended to establish a Palestinian state, regardless of whether there is final agreement with Israel by the increasingly unrealistic deadline of September.
