Weekend passengers warned that rail dispute could escalat

There are indications that the dispute which is affecting mainline rail services around the country is about to escalate over the weekend. Train services were disrupted again this morning as the breakaway Irish Locomotive Drivers Association continues its refusal to operate new rosters. Iarnród Éireann say special services for passengers to major sporting events on Sunday are also in doubt.

Up to 1,000 passengers intending to travel on special services from Offaly to Croke park for a Leinster football championship match on Sunday have been advised to check with their local station. Match services from Athy and Kildare for the same game have already been cancelled because of uncertainty over the availability of drivers. Mainline services to Cork and Kerry will continue to be worst affected over the weekend.
