The body of a man discovered on the beach in Balbriggan early today has been identified as that of Liam Mulpeter, from Ringsend in Dublin. Mr Mulpeter was in his fifties. A search is underway for a second man, also from Dublin. The two companions had been sailing from Balbriggan to Carlingford. Their yacht was discovered unoccupied last night.
The "Giliane" ran aground shortly after eight o'clock last night. The 20-foot fibre glass yacht was found on the Nanny river close to Laytown beach in County Meath. At around six o'clock this morning, the body of Liam Mulpeter was found on the beach in Balbriggan. His companion is still missing. It is understood that both men sailed from Poolbeg to Howth Yacht Club on Friday evening. The following day they set sail for Carlingford stopping off in Balbriggan.
Weather conditions have been more or less the same for the past 24 hours, overcast with choppy seas and northeasterly winds, but not storm conditions. Just what happened to Liam Mulpeter and his companion remains a mystery. An air and sea search has resumed this evening for the missing man. It will continue until nightfall.
