The possibility of the Green Party entering into a coalition government after the next general election dominated the debate at today’s national Green Party convention in Carlow. With the party standing at six per cent in the polls the Greens say they are seriously considering coalition. The Party say that if they can maintain the present level of support then it will definitely make gains at the next general election winning at least four seats.
Trevor Sargent, TD, said he believed politics was on the floor in terms of public credibility because of all the revelations in the various tribunals and he described as “appalling” the appointment of Hugh O’Flaherty to the post of Vice President of the European Investment Bank. He said, "Mr O'Flaherty's nomination only added to the cynicism that was felt by the ordinary person about politics".
