Violence delays kick-off of Leeds United v Galatasaray ma

Violence delayed the kick-off in tonight's tense UEFA cup semi-final in Leeds between Leeds United and Galatasaray. An estimated 200 English fans fought running battles with police. Officers in riot equipment were deployed at the scene, outside Elland Road. 15 people have been arrested. It is reported the fans threw missiles. Earlier, a window in one of the coaches carrying Galatasaray officials to the ground was smashed after being struck by an object. Officials were jeered by Leeds United supporters as their coaches arrived at Elland Road.

The match has been overshadowed by the fatal stabbings a fortnight ago of two Leeds fans before the first leg match in Istanbul. West Yorkshire Police have said they are concerned that Turkish fans, who have been banned from the match, and English football hooligans may be making their way to the city. A huge security operation, involving police forces from neighbouring counties, is in force. Leeds United Football Club took out full page advertisements in all British national newspapers today appealing for calm in advance of tonight's game.
