The Government has given the go-ahead for the use of electronic voting machines in the next General Election. Voters will select their candidates by pressing on a screen and the names will be recorded on a computer disk. The machines mean that results will be known 60 minutes after the polls close. The new system will mean there will be no re-counts, no spoiled votes and the end of the tallyman.
Government officials are looking at three different electronic systems; it is expected that they will select one system during the summer and the equipment will be installed in a number of constituencies for the next election in two years' time.
