Trinity to consider return of Book of Kells to County Mea

There were renewed hopes today that the Book of Kells will be returned to County Meath after the Provost of Trinity College agreed to consider the proposal. Kells UDC is hoping the book will form the centrepiece of an exhibition in a new heritage centre. The Book of Kells can be traced back to a monastery in County Meath which housed the relics of St Columcille. It has been in Trinity College since the mid 19th century. But now the locals want it back.

As work progresses on a £1 million heritage centre to open this summer, it is hoped the book will form the centre piece of an exhibition. The idea was initially dismissed by Trinity College amid concerns for security and conservation. But today the Provost of Trinity College Dr Tom Mitchell, who is in Australia where book is on display did not rule it out and said that he will meet with the local urban district council to discuss the plan

Locals say that they are encouraged by his remarks and plan to spend an extra £70,000 on security if they are successful in brining the book back to Kells.
