Ricardo Lagos has been sworn in as Chile's new president. The 62-year-old takes over from Christian Democrat Eduardo Frei, a fellow member of the centre-left coalition that has ruled Chile since the end of General Augusto Pinochet's dictatorship in 1990. Mr Lagos objected to Pinochet's 17-months detention in Britain and attempts to put him on trial in Spain on charges of torture. However, he also said that he would let justice take its course in Chile, where the ex-dictator faces 72 complaints linked to human rights abuses during his regime.
