Harney confirms minimum wage will be implemented as plann

The Tánaiste has confirmed that the minimum wage will be implemented as planned on 1 April. Speaking in the Dáil, Mary Harney rejected calls from those, such as the Chambers of Commerce, who had sought a delay in its introduction. She promised a major information and awareness campaign to ensure all parties are aware of their rights and obligations under the legislation.

She also told the House she is satisfied the £4.40 rate is fair and equitable to all concerned but she pointed out that under the Programme for Prosperity and Fairness the rate will rise to £4.70 from July 2001 and £5.00 from October 2002. She also pledged further tax reductions in future budgets which will take all workers on the minimum wage out of the tax net entirely.
