Dempsey concerned about Irish reputation as "litter louts

The Minister for the Environment has said that he is seriously concerned about our growing reputation as the so-called "litter louts" of Europe. At the launch of a new Litter Management Campaign in County Clare today, Noel Dempsey urged all local authorities to take the strongest possible action to curb litter.

Clare County Council announced a number of initiatives today. Fast food outlets will be asked to clean up outside or face the rigours of the litter pollution act, and efforts will be made to raise the awareness of post-primary students of the litter problem. The Irish Businesses Against Litter group believes that the on-the-spot fines now standing at £50 should be rigorously enforced or we are never going to change our attitude to litter.
