South Africa celebrates tenth anniversary of Mandela rele

Today is the tenth anniversary of the release from jail of Nelson Mandela, after 27 years of imprisonment under South Africa's apartheid regime. The country marked the anniversary with the opening of a museum and monuments in Mr Mandela's native Eastern Cape region, celebrating his life and achievements. Mr Mandela, who is 81, retired as South Africa's first post-apartheid President last June and is attending today's ceremonies.

A special display was also erected at the hut where Mr Mandela was born and a building in a nearby town will house gifts given to him while head of state. The South African government says that the museum should be seen as a monument to a hero of the liberation struggle whose role in history was ignored under apartheid.
