The IRA in a New Years message published in tomorrows edition of An Phoblacht -Republican News reaffirms its commitment to continue playing a positive role in the search for a just and lasting peace in Ireland. The paramilitary organisation say that as we move into a new century there exists an unprecedented opportunity to leave behind the failures of the past. They also say the search for a durable peace will continue to present challenges to all sides including the republican movement.
However, it also says the recent revelations surrounding British Intelligence covert operations are part of an ongoing attempt by sections of the security forces to wreck the peace process. The statement also says there can be no excuse for further delay in the implementation of aspects of the Good Friday Agreement which are the responsibility of the British government, particularly the issue of demilitarisation.
