Government has agreed in principle to purchase the site of the Battle of the Boyne. The decision to purchase the land follows several weeks of discussions between the department of foreign affairs and the Orange order. The Order is said to be agreeable to the project.
This is an inter-departmental project comprising of the Departments of Foreign Affairs, Arts and Heritage, Tourism and the Environment.
There have also been discussions with the North's church leaders, local communities and the Orange Order. The purpose of making this purchase is to develop the site of the Battle to reflect its historical importance to Ireland.
In a statement issued this evening, The Taoiseach said that in this historic week, we must dedicate ourselves to promoting mutual respect and reconciliation as the site is of particular significance to the unionist population. £150,000 pounds is to be spent on immediate interim measures to improve public access, visitor facilities and information material.
