Police arrest 200 as WTO summit continues

Police in the US city of Seattle have arrested about 200 demonstrators protesting at the World Trade Organisation summit taking place there. The city's police chief said that night time curfews and a state of emergency would continue until the end of the four day meeting. The curfew was imposed yesterday after mass protests resulted in rioting and violence.

President Clinton, who is in Seattle for the summit, condemned the violence but expressed support for on for peaceful demonstrators who want a more transparent, less business-oriented World Trade Organisation.
