In the Heineken European Cup holders Ulster started their campaign in Stade Pierre Rajon, France where they faced Bourgoin in Pool C last night. The French outfit scored a shock 26-12 win, however, over their injury-hit opponents. Ulster were without Irish internationals Jonathan Bell and Andy Ward with thumb and foot problems respectively.
The French led 16-12 at the turnaround and, inspired by a tremendous performance from international centre Stephane Glas, they extended their lead in the second period to run out deserved winners. Laurent Balue and Glas made Bourgoin's tries with Alex Peclier converting both and also kicking four penalties.
Yesterday afternoon in Pool D, Munster had better fortune and continued their winning ways at Thomond Park by beating Pontypridd, of Wales, 32 points to 10. Fly-half, Ronan O'Gara, scored 22 of Munster's total including 5 penalties, a drop-goal and 2 conversions.
In Pool B, Bath lost 25-32 at the hands of Toulouse and Swansea beat Padova 66-19. In Pool E, Montferand overcame Treviso 21-15 and in Pool 6, Northampton won 21-12 against Neath.
Today's fixtures saw Stade Francais beat Glasgow Caledonians 37-18 in Pool A. In Pool C Wasps defeated Llannelli 22-13.
