Rescue teams in Turkey were today attempting to free a woman and a child from the rubble of a supermarket in Duzce, the epicentre of Friday's earthquake. German and Turkish search parties tried to open a tunnel through the rubble having detected the two survivors. A 48-year-old woman was pulled from the debris of a five storey building in Duzce this morning, more than forty hours after the building collapsed. The Turkish Health Minister announced last night that the death toll had risen to 374, but the number of dead is now believed to be around 400.
Officials have said as many as 2,500 people have been injured, and many more are trapped under piles of concrete. Several people have been pulled alive from the rubble, although medical teams were forced to amputate the arm of one pregnant woman before they could free her. Rescuers say freezing temperatures and aftershocks could lead to more deaths.
