Sport: Irish relax before Euro crunch match

As the build-up to Saturday night's Lansdowne Road Euro 2000 first-leg play off continues the Republic of Ireland squad had a day of rest and relaxation at Kilkea Castle outside Castledermot in Co. Kildare today. Denis Irwin has linked up with the squad today after receiving treatment on a ligament injury at Old Trafford while Tony Cascarino is expected to fly in tomorrow after playing for his club, Nancy, tonight.

Wimbledon defender Kenny Cunningham is hopeful of taking his place in the side for Saturday's game. Cunningham suffered a hamstring injury in Sunday's 2-0 victory over Leeds at Selhurst Park. Republic manager Mick McCarthy is confident the 27-times capped defender will be able to take his place. "Kenny, although he didn't train with the squad in Dublin, is much improved. I am optimistic about his chances because he very much wants to play," McCarthy said.

Leeds defender Ian Harte seems certain to play having almost fully recovered from a back injury. That is a boost for the Irish boss after the withdrawal of Mark Kennedy, Steve Staunton, Gary Kelly and Matt Holland because of injuries.Blackburn pair Jason McAteer and Jeff Kenna, both late call-ups, joined the squad on Monday and Boro defender Curtis Fleming have arrived today.

McCarthy has been studying videos of Turkey's recent European Championship games, when they twice defeated NI 3-0 and then overcame Germany 1-0. "The Turks are a dangerous team and well organised," said McCarthy. "They have certainly improved since we beat them 5-0 in Dublin and then 3-1 in Istanbul prior to the 1992 European Championship finals in Sweden."

Charlton skipper Mark Kinsella has been permitted to play for his club in Friday night's First Division game against Grimsby. That is because he is ruled out of Saturday's first leg against the Turks but will be available for the return in Bursa four days later.

Meanwhile, the Turkish squad are based in north Dublin at Portmarnock. This morning they had a light run-around. However, team officials say their training facilities here have left much to be desired. The squad are expected to travel across the centre of town during peak time to train this evening.
