The talks to try to save the Northern peace process are to be adjourned for the night; they will resume again tomorrow. The talks are being held at Castle Buildings in Belfast. David Trimble has been meeting Sinn Féin, the SDLP and Senator George Mitchell. Mr. Trimble has said that it is too early to write off efforts to salvage the peace process.
Today's talks centred on a formula to get the peace process over the current impasse. The Women's Coalition said that a shadow administration could be set up to reassure the community that their politicians were prepared to take decisions once there was agreement on decommissioning.
The SDLP Deputy leader, Seamus Mallon, told supporters in Dublin tonight that the success of the Mitchell review demanded that the needs of the people be put before any party or sectional interest. Downing Street has said that, whatever the outcome of the talks, the peace process would carry on.
