Mitchell review talks underway in London

Talks aimed at breaking the deadlock in the Northern Ireland peace process are being held at the American Ambassador's Residence in Regents Park in London. Sinn Féin's Gerry Adams and Martin McGuinness were seen through a window of the building this afternoon. The Review chairman Senator George Mitchell said that the talks were now entering "a crucial phase." Last night, he said that it remained his firm view that the review can succeed.

All of the parties are understood to have been instructed by Senator Mitchell not to talk to the media. The talks are expected to continue until Friday, if necessary. It is thought that, by then, there will be a good indication as to whether progress can be made next week when the pro-Agreement parties are expected to return to Stormont.
