The General Secretary of the Association of Secondary Teachers, Charlie Lennon, has said that he is against the publication of league tables of Irish schools, based on their exam results. Following representations by three newspapers, the Freedom of information commissioner Kevin Murphy ordered the release of material about school exams. In one of his most important judgements, the Commissioner said the release of the information would not have a major impact on enrolment patterns in schools
This lunchtime the Department of Education said that it was studying the judgement, and is expected to appeal the decision to the High Court. The Government decided last year not to follow the British example of publishing school league tables based on exam results. Speaking on RTÉ’s Morning Ireland, Mr Lennon said that his union would support the Department's efforts not to release the data.
