Torrential rain has been continuing to fall in Mexico, prompting fears that the death toll of 140, due to flooding and landslides will rise. It is the worst flooding to hit the country for forty years. An emergency has been declared in five states as flood-waters isolate huge areas, restricting power supply and setting off mud slides. Fourteen thousand people have been forced into shelters, and dozens are reported missing.
The central state of Puebla was the worst hit, with 88 people reported dead and many more missing. In one incident, a mudslide engulfed a school where 60 people were sheltering. More rains are forecast to fall across much of southern and central Mexico today.
