In Japan at least 26 people have been killed and 300 injured in a typhoon which hit the western coast. Typhoon Bart triggered flash floods landslides and a tornado. The southern island of Kyushu was also hit, causing havoc with high waves. Dozens of rescuers rowed out in rubber dinghies to search for victims in the houses, some of which were flooded up to the roof.

In Hiroshima, a 100-tonne crane fell and smashed a plant belonging to Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd., leaving three people dead and four others injured, officials said. In Hiroshima Bay, the typhoon destroyed part of the centuries-old Itsukushima shrine, a world heritage site.
